Only people who are suffering from tinnitus will know how badly the constant ringing in the ears is affecting their ability to lead a normal life. To some, ringing in the ears, or tinnitus, may be a fairly minor irritation and they are able to cope with it. However, for most of the tinnitus sufferers, they desperately want to know how to stop ringing ears, because the condition is severely impinging on their life.
If you’ve been suffering from tinnitus for a while, first of all you’ll know that how hard it is to fall asleep at night; you now have to deal with insomnia in addition to ringing ears. Without having a good night rest, you won’t be able to concentrate on your work the next day, thus affecting your productivity.
Over time, your energy reserves are depleted, you become physically and mentally drained, your work and relationships are affected, you just feel so stressed out and depressed. And your tinnitus just gets worse than ever!
So, the first thing that you would want to do when you have tinnitus is to learn how to stop ringing ears so that you can sleep well. You’ll need energy and a good state of mind to deal with the noises in your head, as well as to keep living (and your sanity intact!) as normally as you could.
Here are some of the things you can do to stop ringing in the ears, or at least make it quieter, so that you can sleep well.
Get physically active
Regular exercise is necessary for everyone to keep healthy, but is especially important for people with tinnitus. Exercise increases blood circulation, helps eliminate toxins from your body, and feeds nutrients to your brain and auditory system.
Exercise also helps you to relax and relieve stress. When you exercise, your body releases a biochemical called endorphins that will increase pain thresholds and make you feel better. Exercise regularly, say at least three times a week and not shorter than 20 minutes each time, will greatly help you in getting a good night’s sleep.
Mask the sounds
You can mask the annoying sounds of tinnitus with tinnitus maskers or tinnitus instruments. They do not exactly stop ringing in the ears, but are useful in taking your mind off tinnitus.
A tinnitus masker is a device that fits within the ear canal and emits a sound (e.g. sounds of running water, rainfall, crashing surf, etc) designed to distract your mind from tinnitus.
A tinnitus instrument is a combination of tinnitus masker and hearing aid that amplifies external sound to divert your attention from the internal sound of tinnitus. Tinnitus instruments are more effective in masking tinnitus. You can turn off the hearing aid but leave the masker on when you go to sleep at night.
Take natural sleeping aid (not sleeping pills!)
Taking nutritional supplements and eating the right food may not stop ringing in the ears, but can be very useful in taking you to your dreamland. Some of the natural substances known to aid natural sleeping include:
- Chamomile – promotes a general sense of well-being. It’s relaxing, soothing, and may help encourage sleep. Try taking a cup of chamomile tea before bedtime.
- Tryptophan – very useful for getting to sleep. It is commonly found in foods like milk and turkey. The tryptophan in milk is released when it is heated. Now you know why babies fall asleep so fast after milk feedings. Try drinking a glass of warm milk before you go to bed.
- Black cohosh – helps to relieve pain, and has relaxing properties as well.
One or more of the methods mentioned above should be able to help you get a good night’s sleep. Once you start to sleep well again, you’ll notice an improvement in your tinnitus.
